Shrews spoil Backe start

Hans Backe

Backe (right) is the new chief at Notts County

Swedish manager Hans Backe endured a frustrating first game in charge of League 2’s richest club. Fellow promotion hopefuls Shrewsbury Town came away from Meadow Lane – but it could, and should have been more.

Town started the better of the two sides, their slick passing creating an opportunity but Kevin McIntyre’s low cross just evaded the lunging Waide Fairhurst at the far post. But it wasn’t long until they had the lead, Dean Holden’s cross falling nicely for on-loan Jamie Devitt who buried his finish low past Kasper Schmeichel.

The match really came alive after half-time. Notts County came out in search of an equaliser, and Steve Phillips had to be alert to deny former Shrew Luke Rodgers at the near post. But is was Shrewsbury who had a glorious chance to extend their lead. Dean Holden put in another teasing delivery, which Schmeichel did well to claw out. The ball fell to top scorer Dave Hibbert, but his volley was cleared off the line.

It turned out to be the turning point in the game, as Town began to come under serious pressure. Backe introduced Ade Akinbiyi from the bench and he quickly produced a smart turn and shot to test Phillips. However it soon told, as skipper Graeme Lee lingered at the far post and Luke Rodgers found him in acres of space to nod in.

Shrews manager Paul Simpson was understandably disappointed with the final score, but this game was a fantastic advert for League 2 football.

Rodgers Leaves Vale

Luke Rodgers

Luke Rodgers has finally got his wish. After spending most of the season in and out of the team at Port Vale, he has been snapped up on loan by Yeovil boss Russell Slade.

Rodgers has scored 5 goals so far this season, and joins Yeovil until January 5 with them sitting just above the drop-zone in League 1.

Top 10 Strikers in League 2?

League 2 possesses a lot of good strikers, and here is my top 10.

Jamie Ward1) Jamie Ward – Joint top scorer in League 2 this season with 11 goals, and attracting a lot of interest from the higher divisions.

Andy Bishop

2) Andy Bishop – Consistently a great striker in this division for Bury. Always seems to score against your team!

Peter Thorne3) Peter Thorne – Tops the charts with Jamie Ward – deadly in the air.

Grant Holt4) Grant Holt – Signed for £170,000 from Nottingham Forest, the Shrewsbury striker has netted more goals in all competitions than anyone else.

Simeon Jackson5) Simeon Jackson – The Gills shelled out £150,000 for Jackson, whose pace has seen him net 7 goals this season.

jack_lester6) Jack Lester – Experienced 33-year old who finished 3rd in Europe’s ‘goals to games’ ratio last season, behind Fernando Torres and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ben Strevens7) Ben Strevens – Has been a revelation since he joined Dagenham from Barnet.

Billy Clarke8.) Billy Clarke – Skillful youngster who was on-loan from Ipswich before having to return early because of injury. Has grabbed 9 goals for Darlington this year.

Luke Rodgers9) Luke Rodgers – I find it astounding that Rodgers has not been a regular at Vale Park this season. Quick and a good finisher, no wonder a move to Yeovil is on the cards.

Charlie MacDonald10) Charlie MacDonald – Scored just one goal for Southend last season, but has proven he is a top goalscorer with 7 already this year.
