Sat Nov 22 Round-Up

Darlington went into this weekend top of League 2, but faced a fight from fellow promotion candidates Brentford. The Quakers looked like bouncing back from a mid-week loss to Droylsden when Richie Foran headed in unmarked. However a late Karleigh Osbourne equaliser denied them, and gave Wycombe the chance to go top.

And they did, in an entertaining game at home to Port Vale. Chris Zebroski and Matt Harrold both netted twice, although the Chairboys were made to work for it. A Marc Richards penalty, and a Scott Brown shot, twice brought the Stoke side within a goal.

Elsewhere at the top, Rochdale moved into third with a comfortable victory. Lee Thorpe and Adam le Fondre eased them home against rock-bottom Luton. Bury and Dag & Red both kept up their challenges with convincing wins. Bury ripped the form books apart with a 4-0 victory over Gillingham, while Dagenham smashed inconsistent Notts County 6-1, which included a Paul Benson hat-trick.

And Shrewsbury held on at Lincoln despite having Richard Walker sent off in the third minute.

Two early goals from Billy Clarke (above) and Ricky Ravenhill saw Darlington overcome struggling Grimsby, who are now without a league win in 22 attempts. Jean-Paul Kalala scored a consolation on his return to Blundell Park.

Elsewhere in the division, high-flying Wycombe were held to a goaless draw by Rotherham. Barnet showed that their draw at Shrewsbury was no fluke, as they came from behind three times to draw with Bradford.

Rochdale moved imperiously up to 5th with a great victory at Brentford. Rory McArdle headed in to give Dale an early lead, and on the stroke of half-time Will Buckley added a second. On-loan Dean Bowditch got one back, but and Brentford’s late appeals for a penalty were turned down.

Spireites continue scoring streak

With a full set of mid-week games, League 2 threw up some interesting results.

Chesterfield went to third-placed Exeter and came away with a stunning 6-1 victory. Chesterfield went 1-0 up thanks to Jamie Winter thunderbolt from 25 yards out. Just before half-time they grabbed a second, Alan Goodall cutting inside and finishing well. Exeter pulled one back early in the second half, but a quick brace from veteran striker Jack Lester, plus goals from Jamie Ward and substitute Darren Currie saw the Spireites cruise to victory.

Elsewhere in the division, Chester City surprisingly overcame a lacklustre Brentford at the Deva. Ryan Lowe netted twice in a 3-0 victory for the underdogs. A late winner from Barry Conlon saw Bradford sneak a win over early-season pace setters Bury. Darlington beat Rotherham United 1-0 at the Don Valley stadium, while Shrewsbury went three games without a win, drawing 2-2 at home to Barnet.

League leaders Wycombe’s game at home to Macclesfield was abandoned after 23 minutes due to the bad weather, while Luton’s home fixture against Bournemouth suffered the same fate.
